What's it like at Capital One?

Recruiter from C1 hit me up, wondering how people there like it. I'm an L4 at Uber and I'm open to looking outside. They seem to have cool projects (Alexa, Eno, and the cafes). What's the culture like and how's the SF locations? Is the work as interesting as it seems on the outside? Obligatory: 260k TC, 3 YOE.

I thought Uber has the most interesting projects , no ?

Uber @w@ OP Jul 22, 2018

Yes but I like to interview yearly... Keeps my value high and my skills sharp

Microsoft Fro Jul 22, 2018

Lol who said uber has interesting projects ? It’s only those who don’t know say that :)

I am on my way out of Capital One actually. Some reasons why: 1. Company has no respect for SF office. the CEO refuses to visit us and there is virtually no leadership in this building. The VP in charge of SF was fired a few months ago and then they tried to tell us that she had planned to leave for several months... Yeah right then why did they have a meeting last minute? 2. Constant restructuring, in the last 12 months I think two large orgs were disbanded and most of the employees laid off. Halo, Small Business, all gone and their projects all got taken to East Coast. 3. Low quality code base, really bad coders who just cargo cult and make the problems worst because they don't care to be responsible 4. You're an Eng right? Uber is monopoly money but C1 doesn't do equity grants until you're a Director so your TC will be even lower than it is now 5. I heard Uber got rid of stack ranking, well... bad news. CEO loves it and thinks it's the best system. Many of my good friends and quality talent leave because of it. 6. Performance management is about marketing yourself as a 1000x rockstar developers instead of any quality output, so forget about anything but politics. Seeing you are from Uber... It might be a good fit? 7. Last week someone in my org sent a farewell email calling out the CEO for never visiting... and our VP who is also never visiting decided to fire him and have security remove him from the building for it. My advice... just don't do it.

No

Capital One c1Revan Jul 22, 2018

Not recommend if you are interested in SF! Go to their VA office and you might find something interesting. Again, chances of doing anything interesting is highly doubtful!

Microsoft WoCE36 Jul 22, 2018

Lots of lots of Indians there. Hard to blend into clique if you’re not an Indian

Capital One c1Revan Jul 22, 2018

That’s not entirely true! They have good mixed!

Splunk 🥜 case Jul 23, 2018

And no Indians in Microsoft?

Capital One barbarian Jul 23, 2018

They do stack ranking / forced ranking. That means they lay off 10% every year. It creates a lot of toxic relationships and behavior. Its smarter on your part if you run away screaming 'fuck no!' at the recruiters. They're the front wheels on the bus they throw people under later.

Capital One CWbf75 Jul 26, 2018

It is a forced stack ranking, but I didn't see layoffs in my team or around

Capital One lala🎃 Jul 26, 2018

People are not necessarily laid off immediately after a forced ranking. You get put on coaching plan and performance improvement plan. I think it's after 2 consecutive forced ranking, that leads to termination

Capital One jango Jul 23, 2018

Amazing

Capital One OLB Jul 23, 2018

It's a big company and different experiences abound. However SF seems like the worst office to work in.

Capital One barbarian Jul 23, 2018

Its not. The worst ones are when you're the leftovers after they've laid off everyone else in the location.

Capital One Cheeter Jul 23, 2018

Tbh, sf is going through an identity crisis though. Too much dependency on easy coast teams.

Capital One Rinzler Jul 23, 2018

I’m at C1 now. East coast. C1 is trying hard to be a software company. We need more good talent to help fight the bureaucracy. If they can match your comp and you find a good place where you can make an impact and help the company grow then it’s an ok place.
