Google to me is like Microsoft right now. * Perks suck because too many employees. * Food sucks * TC numbers I’ve seen so far are abysmal * Takes forever to progress through career I’m wondering how it’s still considered a top company. Companies like Airbnb, Lyft, Pinterest >>> Google IMO. And no I didnt just fail a Google interview. Actually, i rejected an offer recently. TC - $240k, YOE - 2
What about FB? Honest opinion?
I feel it’s still a top company if you end up in a good team. The peer talent and growth opportunities in these teams is >> all the other companies you mentioned. The quality of various perks may have gone down, but I find it good enough compared to other big companies in the Bay Area.
I agree with you but it is all about perception. Just count how many people on Blind post about their upcoming Google interview. Most of them sound nervous because they think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. How many other companies can say the same?
Yes, but then they follow up their posts with how Google lowballed them and they turned down Google offer. People just walking away from Google offer used to be unheard of. Now no one gives a fuck about turning them down.
I don’t think that is as common as you make it out to be. If it is, then we’d start having problems with filling our candidate pipelines. But right now, we still have more than enough candidates to pick from. So many that most candidates are still willing to wait for headcount, even though headcount this year is the highest it has ever been. Ever noticed those Blind posts asking about Google headcount and team-matching?
Google is still awesome. I wouldn’t want to go to pinterest or airbnb, but Google I would genuinely consider.
yeah but opinions from amazon don’t count
And Uber says so.
IMO It depends on your specialty. If you are a full stack, then yes airbnb and others can be better. but if you are MLE or Infra, then these companies do not offer eough peers and competitors. It’s like being a sde in Alaska.
Let's compare to Microsoft: Spread thin perks > non-existent perks Free food > no free food 1.3-1.5x TC > 1x TC Slow career progress in safety and comfort > slow career process with risk of layoffs

Google interview experience and offer was underwhelming tbh. It’s not the company it used to be. Those who care have left. Those who stayed don’t care.
Engineering culture at Google is still top notch.
Keep repeating this meme ^ it actually isn’t that great anymore.
