Visa blinders, I got a ping from a recruiter inviting me to interview. Of course there is no guarantee I will get the job since I have not interviewed but when doing research on visa I came across two things that multiple folks have told me: 1. Lots of culture issues and politics 2. Blame game I have not faced the above at msft so I am unsure what they really mean. Do people not get promoted based on merit? What is politics? When deadlines get missed, do people just blame one another? What concerns me is pretty much every blinder has told me to run the other direction from visa. 😂 Don't get me wrong some msft reviews are bad but for visa every single review is not positive. I worked there for a few years and honestly the only people I saw promoted were part of certain cliques. One manager got promoted twice despite not having any experience in the role, simply because they were a favorite of the big boss. Internal movement is terrible as well. And finally, there is a lot of blame game. If your boss can’t go head to head against another they will throw you under the bus to save their own skin. Stay at Microsoft.
Stay at Microsoft, visa is not for techies .
I think blinders can get a bit extreme, but having worked here for a bit, the politics isn’t much of an issue (at least not more than any other place), and likewise for blame game. A lot of the engineering team is largely Indians, so if you’re not used to Indians, there will be some cultural oddities. The main issue with Visa is TC, but if you’re at MSFT you’ll probably only jump ship if the TC is worth it. It’s a very stable place, so recession or not, layoffs aren’t really a thing here.
Visa recruiter said they may not be able to beat my compensation.
Yeah then leave it be then
Why Microsoft to VISA?
Idk about others. Pay is relatively not as good (probably very low for seniors), but it is super nice!
As a L6 SWE, I can confidently say that working at Visa is pretty much equal to stagnation. I haven’t learnt shit and feel really stuck with incompetent idiots. But I’ll have to stay in this job for atleast another year to not look like a hopper, so will have to suck it up and stay put. What you’ve heard and read is spot on. I can’t complain about my team members to my manager because these dudes have been here for a fucking decade, so they are my manager’s favorite. And they literally have no clue of what’s going on in the project, nor they have any technical skills. I’ve pretty much reached the tipping point with these fucking idiots. Also, the problem is that most teams in the tech org are infested with these cockroaches, so switching teams is of no use. I wish I could swap my job with you.
This may be a factor of the group one is in. I have been in Visa for four years now and I don’t see anything different from some of the other valley companies I have worked in. In my group, the work is cutting edge, people respect each other and focus on getting the work done.
Folks responding to this thread, for the most part, are the ones who are frustrated with where they are - so expect confirmation bias :)
If you can, stay away from Visa. Lots of politics here. It’s very hard to get promoted based on merit, you should be favorable to your manager. I have a guy in my team who got promoted twice w/o having any skill set and I have a guy who is very hard working but still in the same role.
It’s similar in a lot of companies, the best person doesn’t always gets promoted. However the person promoted probably focused on the key things for upper management, well connected and they know what they are working on, etc. not always what you do but what management knows you’re doing and the impact that makes
Lots of tech companies have Indians... i don't see anyone complaining about all of then
You have been warned! Do as you please my friend.
