How to become elite at algorithm problems?

I’d like to get into g/fb, but I always fail at the phone interview. Is it possible for me to become good?

Nope

Leetcode e e t c o d e

Microsoft 5’6 Indian OP Mar 8, 2018

I did study that and still failed first round. Google doesn’t ask leetcode questions.

Then it means you are stupid and doomed, period

Pray to the python gods to download the wisdom of leetcode

Microsoft Euh8be73 Mar 8, 2018

Learn and practice. Algorithms textbook + 1-2 hours of leetcode per day for a year will make a ton of difference (less for some, more for some). Just don’t forget about the other stuff, like soft skills, knowing your tools and language, being good at explanation and system design considerations

Microsoft 5’6 Indian OP Mar 8, 2018

I already understand algorithms

Microsoft Euh8be73 Mar 8, 2018

Like, all of CS “standard” ones? And you can write up any medium difficulty textbook algorithm(e.g. A* or Dijkstra) from the top of your head in 15-20 mins?

Microsoft NS2 Mar 8, 2018

Leetcode might help, but the key is to be smart! Think of the bigger picture, think what they need and how you can help.

Microsoft 5’6 Indian OP Mar 8, 2018

But I’m not smart.

Microsoft PicPocToc Mar 8, 2018

So you are stupid and doomed, wtf are you expecting ppl to say?

Netflix genji Mar 8, 2018

Learn algorithms and practice a lot until you have a good intuition when solving an algorithmic question.

Microsoft 5’6 Indian OP Mar 8, 2018

Holy shit you got into Netflix? And can intuition be improved via practice?

Netflix genji Mar 8, 2018

Solving hard algorithmic problems can still be hard even after tons of practice, but for solving easy/medium problems most of the time it becomes some sort of “pattern recognition”, i.e. given X and Y, this problem must be solvable using Z, so probably should think toward Z... things like that do grow from the intuition that you can gain from practice...

Are you the prestigious guy? Weren't you at amazon?

Microsoft 5’6 Indian OP Mar 8, 2018

Ya I was

Amazon andjdbamba Mar 8, 2018

Wow, even you can get into MS. Rip me. What team at least? You got into a better company but you’re still bitching??

All you know to do is troll?

Google Mar 8, 2018

Obviously, since he's not doing too hot on phone interviews.

I’m asking a legitimate question
