It seems like Apple never gets mentioned as one of the top companies to work for even though I would say the prestige is as high as Google or Fb. I mean, how cool is it to tell people you work for Apple? Amazon and Microsoft don’t have the same effect imo.
Yeah but not many companies pay on par with G/Fb except maybe Netflix and top unicorns. Also G/Fb have had terrible issues with the press lol so not something to be proud of atm
One could argue that having design come first pushes Apple’s engineers to innovate more and devise solutions that have never been done before. Things like how the iPhone X design influenced the creation of FaceID
I’ve been under the impression the pay isn’t spectacular
Apple is huge so there will be people / teams that don’t pay that well but overall Apple pays really well and offers excellent RSU refreshers.
The initial offer is often just ok especially since the initial RSU grants usually are not very big. I think it's only after you've been there at least two or three years and you've accumulated a good amount of stock refreshers that the TC becomes really good.
Tier 1, pay is great with the refresh but perk/benefit is tier 2.
Engineering culture is definitely Tier 2 (tending to 2.5). It’s very frustrating to be an engineer who strives to be doing the best, as you won’t often get the support and infrastructure you need. That said, if you still manage to deliver consistently, pay is definitely tier 1
I’ve heard that a lot of the actual engineering is done by contracted experts provided by the silicon vendors who get picked for design wins. Like intel, AMD, Broadcom, Infineon, ST, etc. when you pick a chip going into something everyone knows is going to sell millions they parachute in the experts to help it get to market on time. Is that (still) true?
Infrastructure is just dogshit. It’s at least 10 years behind Google. But I don’t really consider that “culture”. My experience is that it’s been a lot more collaborative and cooperative with less politics and cutthroatiness than at Google. I’ve never had an issue with cross-team collaboration, everyone’s super helpful.
People who voted Tier 3 probably failed at interviews multiple times a year 😂
It all depends on the org. I would say pay, culture, engineering challenges, wlb is tier1 in my org. Perks are definitely tier 2 or 3 though. The services orgs are in general a better place to be than coreOS side ( other than prestige factor I guess)
Apple gives solid RSU refreshers from what I’ve heard. And the work is quite good in most teams. Perks are above average (shuttles, decent but paid food, 401k match etc) but nowhere near the tier 1 internet services companies.
What better perks do the tier 1s have? Also what perks does Uber have that’s better?
Tier 1 companies have free food, free on-site fitness centers, free barista-made coffee, free on-site spas and massages, free on-site haircuts, free on-site doctors, etc. Also at Apple we have to pay for home internet service. The company-paid phone plan options we have don’t include free unlimited 4G speed hotspot tethering, so we can’t just use a mobile hotspot as our home internet service. Also Apple doesn’t pay for home internet service like google does.
Apple is definitely tier 1. They are also the only one of the top tier that has a legacy and arc of history that connects it with the advent and lore of Silicon Valley, which has made all of us more prosperous than we would otherwise be.
Hm yea you’re right. Apple is definitely an OG if the Silicon Valley
Tier 1 pay wise. Making $400k+ but I do have 10 yoe. Perks are the main thing that really sucks. WLB is amazing especially last 3-4 years since we have a lot more people than when we launched the first iPhone. Some teams that deal with China in h/w or seg may have poor wlb but s/w side is very chilled

Tier 1 prestige and pay, tier 2 perks and culture
Yeah I can agree with that. Culture seems to be vary by team by generally people think WLB is bad and people seem elitists which probably helps make it seem more prestigious
Perks are ridiculously shit. Engineers used to get $12 dinner credit, then they pushed it to only after 7 (cafeteria closes at 8), now they’re regularly sending out emails that you should only use the credit if you actually need to stay late and plan to work afterwards. They also used to give out free apples, but stopped because it was too expensive. They tried for a while to charge $1 per tea bag in the cafeteria, but they had to stop because it was just ridiculous and everyone complained. We also have to pay for the gym... Disagree on culture, though. It’s way less political and competitive than Google (the only other company I have sufficient experience to judge). Everyone mostly cooperates well and is pretty focused on achieving the same goals. WLB is great. Work is interesting and challenging, and engineers have pretty good influence up the chain.
