Google L6 SWE vs. Amazon L7 SWE Offers

***UPDATED I am grateful to have passed HC for Google L6 and am matching with a couple teams. Recruiter is calling me tomorrow to discuss numbers. Interview performance was good. Amazon Seattle offer: Originally 500k, negotiated to 550k then to 575k (final offer) Amazon Bay Area offer: 630k, no negotiation Google MTV offer: Originally 580k, negotiated to 600k + 50k signing (final offer) TC 400k+, YOE 10 (Not at HP currently)

Congrats on the great offers. With good interview performance and a competing offer like yours, G will match at the bare minimum.

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

Thank you! Although the Amazon offer is in Seattle and Google is MTV, so I’m hoping I can get Google at or near the 600k mark.

Google ABC-CEO Dec 19, 2019

They'll probably give you one time extra RSU grant and a big sign on bonus to sweeten the deal. 600k sustained TC is unlikely, but compared to Amazon you'll probably make more money long-term at G

Congrats!!! Where you at now?

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

Thank you :) Sorry I would mention it in person but revealing it on blind may easily identify me.

Is amazon for seattle?

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

Yes Amazon in Seattle. Just edited the post!

Microsoft IcBJ54 Dec 19, 2019

Can you provide a few words on negotiating?

Microsoft IcBJ54 Dec 19, 2019

Do you only start negotiating when they provide the offer?

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

I really didn’t have to negotiate much as soon as both knew the level that I was interviewing with the other they already had an idea of competing offers.

Google refreshers will be better in years 2,3,4 but MTV will be more expensive. Amazon refreshers will mostly only allocate stocks in years 5+ but Google stock grants vest at an even rate. At L6 you'll probably get at least 200k additional RSUs every year* that vest 25% per year over 4 years. * You don't get any new grants the very first calendar year you join. If you start before December 31 of this year, you'll get a new grant in 2020. If you start after Jan 1 then you don't get one until 2021.

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

Yeah I won’t be starting until February. I’m taking a month vacation before I start so it is what it is. Thank you for the insight though!

Microsoft Bimbili Dec 19, 2019

The same with me. I am taking a month off and joining early Jan at G. I will be missing out on some sweet sweet refreshers for a year. But for a months vacation, it's worth it!

But it’s a great place for me haha

Did you do HC before team match? I was under the impression Google was doing team match before HC at least for L5 / L6 hires. Is this not true?

Nordstrom gigiparis Dec 19, 2019

Most people I know who got L5 at google did not team match before HC

When did they get in? AFAIK, the new system (team match before HC) is relatively recent (past 6 months to a year).

Google snidely Dec 19, 2019

What was the interview like? Lots of coding or mostly describing your impact at previous jobs or what?

BlackRock mrblk Dec 19, 2019

Would be great to hear from OP on this

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

2 systems design, some coding, but not as much as I thought they would make me do. It was mainly describing my impact, especially at my current job.

Uber TheThuan Dec 19, 2019

PE at Amazon is a much better role than L6 at G.

Microsoft lcogtfo Dec 19, 2019

Can you please explain why?

Uber TheThuan Dec 19, 2019

An L6 at G is a limited role in a very small area where you are responsible for a lot of execution. PE at Amazon is more of an architect role where you work with a bunch of teams and can help have a much wider impact. On an average there is 1 L6 in every 7-8 google engineers. There is one PE at Amazon for every 35-50 engineers.

Google snidely Dec 19, 2019

Are you managing at your current job or IC?

HP BlessedKid OP Dec 19, 2019

Hybrid of both. I manage quite a bit but technically IC.
