I haven't seen any discussions about Pinterest here. How is Pinterest doing? What is it like to work there? How are the co-workers? What's the culture like?
How's the open source culture there?
check out git hub or the developer blog, lots of things being open sourced recently
I heard it was the complete opposite of bottom up at least for product managers and designers.
I would say it depends on the team, just like most companies. Work in an area where senior leaders still hold it pretty dear? There will be some top down pressure. Work in another area? Tons of freedom. The part of the company I'm in has tons of freedom.
At least my experience is extreme freedom and ownership. I'm driving initiatives the way I want to while keeping the org in sync and looking for feedback from leadership to make sure I'm aligned with overall goals. Much more guidance than tops down. Makes me happy.
How do perf reviews and promotions work there?
Pinterest does not have annual reviews anymore. Each month you write a 3 mins summary on your performance. What you need to get better and you go over it with your manager. Much better than the regular painful cycle. At the end of the year you go over it all.
Promotions happen twice a year. The company is growing fast so you see structure forming on a quarterly basis which is nice to watch.
What do Pinterest folks think about the head of engg leaving for Slack?
look at the churn. they've lost like 50 engineers over the year for an eng org of 300.
How are the individual groups doing? Which teams are good ones for engineering?
Pinterest is more or less a forgotten company. it probably had troubles in both user growth and revenue.. disclaimer that is totally my speculation
A problem with Pinterest is it doesn't really try to drum up media coverage. We have passed Twitter in US MAUs based on Twitter's last quarterly results so I think we are doing ok ;)
It never ceases to amaze me what a chip Twitter employees have on their shoulder. Pinterest is crushing it. Twitter is dying from its arrogance.
I love it. The company is killing it on growth and $$. The people I work with are strong yet humble. Very bottoms up planning, ideation, execution. I strongly believe we will be an epic company with long term upside that will continue to become better every year. Highly recommend joining us.
