Interviewing for a senior product role. 1/ I want to understand interviewers’ seniority/level; 2/ Understand what level / comp that implies for me. Loop: GM - 2 Services (possible hiring mgr) GM - 2 Services Principal PM - 2 Services Sr Principal Engg VP (What is a GM? Actual title or are they actually actually something else?)
Bit confused. Is GM in between sr manager (L7) and director (L8) ? Like 7.5? Google has a 7.5 level for PMs
GM can be an L7 or L8. Seen it used by both. A bit more common for L7. Sounds like you’re being interviewed for L7. Principal PM is L7.
Thx. How fixed is the level typically considered? At this point they just have my resume (similar to many L8 folks), internal referral and one conversation. Does a good interview performance increase possibility of L8? It does look like new senior people are regularly brought in at that level. And if not, can L7 comp be such that it would competitive with L8?
What is this ‘New’ company business? 🤔 ... Would you mind sharing your current company and current level, years of experience?
15-20 yrs experience, mix of startup and BigCo. Last 7 years at startups, including my own. Honestly I didn’t know anything about “levels” until a few days ago, searching on here ;)
Thank you
Btw in AWS, from everything I’ve learned, all GMs = L8 = Director.
General Manager - actual title... manage at least 2 to more services.. report to director.. he/she can have sr. Manager , manager, PM or principal pm reporting to him... PE - l7 SPE - L8, director level Distinguished engineer - vp level
Thanks, super helpful. Can some GMs be Directors themselves? For the titles reporting to them - Sr Mgr, Mgr, PPM, PM - what levels are they?
How technical do you need to be to pass a pm loop at Amazon?
