My boss wants me to work 7 days a week

My boss recently informed that i’ll have to take OnCalls for the whole weekends, and that’s OnCall for the busiest queue in Amazon with an average 3 pages per hour, so i told him i’m cool with that but who can cover me on Thursday and Friday he said no you’re on the project from day1 and literally can’t leave now. I told him my work will be 7 days a week he said it’s temporary till Q2 2024 when they get approved for more headcount I’m an L5 IT Support Engineer i don’t get any OT, and feel i have no life Any suggestions. TC 135 YOE: 6 Update: My skip contacted me and promised he’ll do an off-cycle promotion to 3 L4 Engineers which should fix the issue by the end of the month.

Can you say yes, not show up and start looking asap?

Meta iYThrthi Aug 15, 2023

Say no and start looking asap. If he's the only engineer then manager can't afford to fire. Otherwise manager will be on call 7 days a week.

This is why we always say F**K AMAZON!

Amazon BibiGooo Aug 15, 2023

Wait if I understand this correctly you are on-call by yourself everyday until Q2 2024?

Amazon DcHO20 OP Aug 15, 2023

I’m not OnCall weekdays, just weekends but Weekdays i’m tied to multiple projects

Amazon BibiGooo Aug 15, 2023

So you're oncall every weekend until Q2 2024 that's crazy. If I was in this position I would first start looking for a new job. Then I would push back against this. You know better your financial situation and how much you can afford pushing back. But yeah try to get a new job.

To start, begin polishing resume and applying externally immediately. Is this for all weekends or just during your spot in the rotation?

Amazon DcHO20 OP Aug 15, 2023

All weekends, used to be 1 weekend a month, but 3 of my peers left

Big red flag, run as soon as you have another offer.

Stories like this will become more common as people leave due to RTT

Return to (the) trenches

Can you check what your employment contract states about oncall frequency? If it says something like “occasional oncall rotations for 1-2 weeks” you can fight it legally.

SAP dhfiskxbsl Aug 15, 2023

You can even sue if they breach contract - they treat you like an ass might as well sue them for it

Amazon svDA83 Aug 15, 2023

I think you can make a hell lot of money in this lawsuit😂

Tell that clown to hire more then, otherwise you’re gone too.

How is it even possible to answer 3 pages per hour all weekend? That can't be done by one person it has to be in shifts or else how would you even sleep...

Amazon DcHO20 OP Aug 15, 2023

It’s 8 hours a day then i hand over to APAC, sometimes it’s actually 9 hours

Snap hfw41 Aug 15, 2023

OK well that is still ridiculous for more than one weekend per month, you basically can't go out or do anything

Real toxic

This is AMAZON!

Amazon rtonow Aug 15, 2023

Oncall is a rotation. You can’t be oncall continuously. Confirm this with your manager and loop in the HR if it’s required

Amazon DcHO20 OP Aug 15, 2023

3 of my peers left due to RTO, and they’re not backfilling

Amazon DcHO20 OP Aug 15, 2023

And the L4 doesn’t have the perms to do a weekend rotation as the weekend OnCall typically work by themselves
