It’s not just Amazon, it’s everywhere.
What’s shocking to me is that corporations are made up of humans too. At what point will people fricking realize that life is short and we don’t have to make ourselves miserable
At Microsoft one of my coworkers was in the same situation and he took a month off to take care of his wife (she eventually passed away)
Earths best employer hell yeah
Strive to become* They don't claim they actually are haha
Shittiest company if ever there was one
Why I will never apply there, along with all the other work conditions issues in warehouses and with drivers
Had a friend this happened to. His fiancée was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He was PIPed. She passed away. He took leave, came back and was terminated.
As bad as this story is— why do people expect an employer to just sit there and send them money if they are not working? Why do we have the expectation that an employer should take care of us no matter what event happens in our lives ? It isn’t really Amazon’s responsibility to cover all the downside risk in a persons life… if that is what someone is looking for maybe they should seek out a industry or line of work that provides that …. But you can’t have everything I think there a very very few employers except maybe the government that would have handled this situation differently This is not and has never been the employers responsibility. If this scenario is something that one is concerned about there are options to help mitigate the harm of it occurring (life insurance, for example) Imagine this thinking was applied to other domains: should a person no longer be responsible for their mortgage ? Should the electric company stop sending them bills?
We are all human. If you are a good employee, the employer should have a vested interested in making sure you get back on your feet. In most cases, giving someone time to grieve and heal will be the best thing for both the company and the employee in the long term, as opposed to burning them out and trying to extract every last ounce of work in a short time frame.
Humanity. If you want to argue on terms and risk...with that logic why any employee would spend more than a single second of their outside 40hours/ week workload exceptions. If a system is down...why ask an employee. If some one didn’t show up at work...why cover
that's absolutely disgusting from Amazon, wasn't there a similar story at Atlassian too?
Most companies hire and train managers to show compassion and be empathetic. They also side with employer if manager was at fault. I can cite an example here. Whilst at my vacation to visit my aging parents in India, my dad had a major accident, as a result of which I could not deliver on some of my commitments. Manager was unhappy and they asked me to submit medical report of my dad including X-rays in workday. Reported the atrociousness to the skip level, Hr was involved and a week later manager was fired.
F Amazon. Just stop applying there people.
I wouldn't even apply there to get into FAANG. 😂
Nobody else will hire me. I went from 15k to 150k with Amazon. I'm not going back to 15k. I'm applying and interviewing everywhere else, I'm grinding LC, but the truth is I'm a subpar developer and nobody wants me. So.. I'll continue writing shitty and buggy code for Amazon 😅
