HBO comp model
Seeing some good numbers, Trying to decide if I should interview at HBO. How does the bonus award work? Is it annual, performance based? Spread over 3/4 years? Tc 220k 4 yoe
In your offer letter you will be given a target bonus. Let’s say it’s 25%. This is a multiplier. At the end of the year you will be given a performance rating between 100-150 with the average being 125. This rating then gets multiplied to your bonus target and multiplied again to your base to become your bonus, which will then be paid out to you once a year over the course of the next 2 years on a 50/25/25 split. For example. Let’s say your base is 180k and your bonus target is 25%. Let’s say for the year of 2018 you achieve an average performance rating of 125. Your 125 performance rating gets multiplied to your 25% bonus target to become 31.25%. (.25 * 1.25) That 31.25% would then get multiplied by 180k to become a bonus of 56k That means at the end of 2018 you would get paid 28k. (50% of your bonus) At the end of 2019 you would get paid 14k. (Plus 50% of your 2019 bonus.) At the end of 2020 you would get paid 14k + 50% of your 2020 bonus + 25% of your 2019 bonus. At the end of 2022 you would get paid 50% of your 2022 bonus + 25% of your 2020 bonus + 25% of your 2021 bonus. And so on. Usually for the first two years you will be given an additional sign on bonus to cover the gap until you start getting your full bonus. Hope that helps.
It’s hard to directly compare HBOs TC with other tech companies since it all cash based. From what I gather though our TC seems roughly on par with Amazon.

What's a good Target bonus for a staff-2 offer? And how negotiable is it?
I’ve never heard of anyone being able to negotiate on a target bonus. It’s a standard number across all levels. If you have an offer I’m sure whatever target bonus they gave you is the standard for that level and it likely won’t change. You may be able to negotiate on signing bonus and base, though you typically will need be able to provide a counter offer in order to do anything there.
