Can you recommend companies where there's a good (non brogrammer) tech culture / good compensation for women? Suggestions outside the US welcome as well. what do you like most about the place?
Me me me me me...salesforce
We just appointed a chief equality office. There are quite a few females running the show and I haven't seen females disrespected from my point of view. I am a male and I work with quite a few females (my org/team)in tech.
My personal experience from the last twelve years is that a lot of the disrespect women get is quite subtle. For example, a product manager asked an intern a tech question while I was sitting right there. The intern of course knew nothing but the product manager assumed that he knew more than me when I was a senior engineer. It is not something that men think is a big deal, but it is actually really common. It is more harmful than sexual harassment because sexual harassment is pretty overt. The more subtle shit is like gaslighting. Also a lot of compensation packages look similar in base pay but the RSUs vary very widely.
Pinterest?
Hilarious.
I thought Xerox was pretty great when I was there
yep! I had an internship there a few years back, and they'd recruited pretty heavily through grace hopper that year. plus it sets a good tone when their c-suite is heavily female.
wow that's crazy. only heard the bad stuff growing up. I'll have to give it another look :)
I work for Blizzard Entertainment in LA. Each team has its own culture, but I have found its really welcoming to women. They like incredible people. I haven't yet seen sexism. Sometimes you see personalities that don't match up, but really that happens anywhere. I
My impression was that Blizzard promotes a lot from within and it's hard to enter. Do you think my assessment is off base (genuine question)
They definitely do a lot of promoting from within, but they also do hire from the outside. Getting in being difficult is more about their lack of recruiters. They're all swamped all the time, so the process can be slow. I know, I am good friends with one of them.
OMG you should definitely come work for Grab. No assholes. But: Southeast Asian societies may shock you
I would expect no less than complete culture shock haha 😎 but i have been told that singapore is a pretty amazing place. do you know if they are accepting of foreign software devs joining? i believe it's usually the case that a sponsor is needed for working/living in another country.
Not just Singapore -- Grab has engineering centers all over (India, China, USA, Vietnam etc) I'm not qualified to comment on sponsored relocation, but from a culture standpoint, being foreign is a total non issue. As long as you've got the engineering chops we need (and, let's face it, if we can afford you), we want you!
Spotify
Artsy
i like the fact that they put their technologies out there in public view without making me browse thru a ton of job openings to get a feel for their stack.
OSS for the win! I love working in the open.
GoDaddy ppl are great, culture is awesome, pay is competitive. Our CEO was a key speaker at Grace Hopper last year https://anitaborg.org/profiles/godaddy-women-in-tech/ As a company we're transparent about everything including compensation (see link above)
Except for the bad karma stuff. And the horrible UX.
bad karma? explain?
Capital One. We have a lot of women everywhere but I was surprised at just how many women were in tech positions, from our VP on down.
