Google India - L4 - accept or reject at 6.5 Yoe Faang experience?
Hi all, I am SDE2 at amazon. Been with company for more than 6.5 years and sde2 for more than 4.5 years (changed orgs after 1 year of sde2 in previous org). I recently interviewed at G India and got offer for L4 (SDE2 equivalent but termed as SWE3). I was hoping for L5 and even had a design round which went extremely well but i was still tagged for L4 because of less YoE. (6.5y overall excluding internships) The reason I started interviewing was because I was kind of losing trust on my SDM. But recently my SDM, herself, started asking me to write my promo doc. I have done decent work for next level but the other sde3 in my org continuously tries to undermine everyone else and gives negative feedbacks (unless pressured by SDM to provide justification). He has made sure that not even a single SDE1 got promoted in last 1.5 year. But recently, he has changed a little and gave feedbacks for a couple of Sde1 to 2 promos and managerial promos. Google made me an offer of TC 70LINR (roughly 95kUSD) with joining bonus in first year of 6L INR (roughly 8k USD); compared to my current inflated TC of 66LINR at Amazon. Does it make sense to join Google as L4 at this point in my career (delays me from reaching next level by at least 2 more years)? Or should I aim to complete that promo (might require me designing one more system if reviewer shares gaps and takes it to q1 promo)? Note: i do have two more internships at Faang only before joining Amazon as FTE in case that changes anything Edit: 1. Google would require me moving cross country for the role. Not a major factor but the TC ain't increasing by a lot either.
Google L4 maps to Amazon L5. If you're getting a higher pay at G, why won't you join? Are you on track to be promoted at Amazon within the next year? If not, then I'd join Google
Google requires me to move cross country and away from family with no significantly major bump in TC. If they gave me an L5 Tc or an L5 role, it would have been a no brainer. Regarding promo, it feels like it. I definitely would have to work my ass off to get inclination, but my SDM and skip are aligned. It's kind of like a goal for them to promote two of us long running sde2s within the year
Makes sense to get promoted at Amazon and then try Google L5. Because once you come to Google as L4 you'll easily have to wait for 2-3 years to get promoted to L5.
What's your breakdown? Base vs stocks? And have you included joining bonus in TC?
Base: 35L Stocks : 35L each year. Didn't include my joining bonus in TC as that is nothing but a distraction to me. Joining bonus is 6L for the first year.

So, a G SDE1 is better than an Amazon SDE2? Highly doubt that . SDE2 at amazon is a vast role. There are people with 16 yoe as sde2 and amazingly talented. At same level, yes. I agree G> Amazon.

If you are talented and know the domain, you can get some real good chill months. Been in different teams; has been like this always. Not Bragging, just sharing. I don't work my ass off all the time, just 3 months a year. But those 3 months, i am at 🔥. The rest of the months, i guide other engineers more than work on my own IC tasks.
