Do you have to show proof to either party? For example, do I have to show proof of total compensation from my current company in order to negotiate with new company? And if I wanted to get a counter with current company, do I have to show proof of an offer? I know some companies do and some don’t. But curious on what’s the latest given some recent salary-asking law changes.
They can't find out how much you made unless you tell them, and you could fake the paystub or bank statement or whatever, so you hold most of the cards at this table.
Not only do you NOT have to provide your salary history, in many states it’s illegal for your prospective employers to ask about your salary history.
Why put the control in the companies hands. Ask for you want not what others believed you are valued at.
Sometimes to get a counteroffer from your current company, you might be asked for proof of the other offer.
I know you don’t have to show any sort of proof, however they would be able to see the numbers from your background check, would they not?
No. Background checks do not give access to your bank accounts.
I meant salary. Say you were OP and you said you made 200k, but in actuality it was 160k. On the background check they would see 160
Interesting! Curious...if I left, could new employer verify if you’re still currently employed?
Hell no. Be confident when you tell the recruiter: I have an offer for X from Y company. Id much rather work for you. Can you beat it? Salary negotiation is not hard
Totally agree here. Use another offer as leverage. Also, highlight you only have x days to make a decision so they make a decision quicker.
What if you have no counter offer?
