Tell the real expectation in mind? A bit higher or lower? Don’t talk about numbers until offer phase?
Just mention what "other" aggressive recruiters have quoted you. "The person from CyberCoders was aiming for 1.5-2, but they mostly had backfill positions. Also, when a senior such-and-such has +99 yrs experience above me, he won't even apply to these jobs."
CyberCoders is such a scam recruiting company. Better avoid or delete your profile over there. Recruiters are amateurs
As of Jan 1st recruiter is legally required to give you their range if you ask
Is this law federal or only certain states?
California law, per our in house recruiter
CA and NY have passed the law. You basically don’t have to reveal anything at all. I would 100% ask for the range. Best thing is not to be a dick but build a rapport with the recruiter. Once they like you they will advocate on your behalf, if the recruiter I good.
About the range: what if you want higher than the range? I’m thinking that if you never asked, you may be able to negotiate the heck out of it and get above, but if you get the range then you’re limited to the top of it. Thoughts?
Every role has a salary range set by the experience required by the role and finance budget. If you are above the range then it is your choice to come into play at a salary sacrifice and NOT negotiate. You’ve basically wasted everyone’s time and been a dick if you think you can come in and bump up the level of the role and salary. Don’t be a dick, right? The law is trying to serve people who have been salary compressed and pay inequity. Again, don’t be a dick.
Lol thanks I will try not to be a dick. That said, for my particular situation I am looking at a role that is originally an Senior position that they have agreed to move up to a Lead position. So I’m thinking that the initial salary band is different now
Lol. No worries on not being a dick :) By law, now if a salary band has been increased/decreased recruiting now needs to go back a let candidates know that the ranges are now higher/lower. You should now ask if the band has been increased and have them tell you the New banding. Hope this info helps.
Question: when do you come back with a counter in negotiation? When they call you with an offer do you say: 1) “thank you and let me get back to you” and then reply next day would a counter? 2) or do you provide counter right on that first call? Thoughts and experiences?

Avoid talking about salary till offer phase. Multiple benefits: 1. They have invested way too much time in you.. if they still like you they will offer good amount 2. Always talk about money from a position of strength. After interviewing you if they want to offer you a position, they like you more than before interviewing you. Before interviews, they will always mention how much an average joe would make in the position. After offer phase it can only go up. 3. If nothing, you go through interview practice and be better prepared for the next one!
