Green card eb2 queue - Indian - did you consider migration to Canada rather?

Am in the same boat - so would like to hear pros and cons from people who had been through this.

Did consider. Ain't worth it. No bang for the buck and plus it's too cold too.

Considering.. sick of immigration shit.. GC backlog and then add the H4 EAD nonsense.. too difficult to stay.. as if always on the edge ready to pack up.. I mk 300k.. pay taxes in bay area .. have channelized my energy, knowledge and expertise to contribute to US economy.. what do I get in return? Status of a beggar, insult and uncertain future. Neither the country nor the companies care.

Thanks for your hard work and taxes

You get to be in the same time zone as Trump so you get all the news instantly. Isn't that worth it?

That's all because we made an assumption and took a bet on the US system. Nobody gave us a guarantee when we came here. We assumed things will go fine. Guess what, things change and you should be ready to face consequences. On the flip side, you make 300k and lived a great life for many years, enjoyed many things you wouldn't have otherwise if u were working in Bangalore, Hyderabad or Chennai. And if u still don't like the uncertainty and feel like a beggar ...you have choice...keep all the savings and investmenst and go back. No one is stopping you. For full disclosure I am still on the same boat for many many years but decided to ignore these things and move on with life. Changed my perspective and life got better. A bit of extra pain for international travel or job changes but got it done because I decided to accept it as part of life. Try that perspective. Frankly, this is no big deal. We have plenty of options and there could be far worse things that can happen in life than this visa situation. We didn't come here seeking refugee. We are not deciding not to go back because the country is at war. It was all a choice for a better life that didn't work out exactly as expected, that's all.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Please dont tell mine is wrong. Surely you do not have a spouse who career is riding on flaky and inconsistent Immigration policies. And do not generalize the definition of “good life”. Lastly, for god’s sake dont mk this about gratitude. Working out for you? great... but others may be interested in a solution more suitable to their definition of what they want.

I do have a spouse. She had to give up her original career plans, had to go to school here...learn new skills and take up new job. Bought a home, got close to a decade of experience. Have a kid.Never said this is about gratitude. I am just helping us try a different perspective

One of my friends already got the Canadian PR in express entry. I am also considering it. 4 years wait already with no future ETA of when it will come is demotivating in lot of ways.

Nope. Will not wait for gc nor will I immigrate to any other country. Will go back once my 6 yr h1b ends.

Intel lifzasom Dec 16, 2017

6 year term is what I was eligible initially when I entered USA. Though company filed for GC not really looking forward for it. No much expectations and believe opportunities would knock for at right time.

What is so bad about going back? You just got comfortable on a temp thing. You can use your experience and expertise and take it back home to build there?

Apple Bnhjk56 Dec 16, 2017

Just survive for 21 years after you have a kid in USA. There now you have a timeline for green card. If you can only survive 15 of those years then better get a Canadian PR and citizenship for the interim period and then move back once your kid can sponsor you.

Microsoft techczar Dec 17, 2017

Another perspective to take....write down concretely what are the things you want to do if you get a GC. Triage if they are really essential for you and your family's survival here. Ask yourself if it is just all for peace of mind or are they all things you will rigorously go after as soon as you have the GC. For each, try what relatively doable but a bit painful workaround is possible. That way we finally boil it down to the core set of absolute blockers. Then we get to decide if that small list is very important to us that we need to absolutely make a hard call on whether to move back or not...

Immigrations levels in the US are beyond what they anticipated it in the 80’s and 90’s. They actually don’t want more people to become permanent residents which will then be more pressure in their already failing social security systems and all. We are already at 330 million population so don’t expect the federal govt to make any easy for Indians and Chinese because they are not going to. Even if Trumps merit based system gets implemented , it favors younger population. Like in 20’s and 30’s so 40+ screwed there also. In my opinion if life is good like this then continue what’s the problem. There is a problem if your kids are 18 and they weren’t born here because then they cannot be in h4 and convert in to student visa or something . Moving to Canada is an option but honestly the kind of work you do and the comp you get here you are not even going to get half of it and plus pay 45% in taxes.
