Best year for used VW GTI?

Anyone have any thoughts on buying a certified GTI? What years are best? Is a 2012 GTI going to be better than a 2013 Golf, all things being equal?

Get a Golf EV instead. Get with the program and stop indirectly supporting terrorism! Using domestic energy is the way to go, imho.

But the range on those is so weak. No more road trips. My round trip commute is 80 miles so I could not even stop off for dinner.

Sixth generation from 2008 to 2013. Seventh generation sold after that. (Mk6 vs mk7). One would prefer a newer generation car but not produced in the first 6 months to one year of the newer generation - manufacturer is still 'bug fixing'. So I would put in extra to buy 2015 or later mk7.

I'm very confused reading this. You seem to be saying two different things. What is your recommendation exactly?

Microsoft DaOG14 Dec 16, 2017

Sorry, my bad, poor articulation. If you're okay with spending few thousands extra, you would want to get mk7 2015 or later. If you don't want to spend few k more, then mk6 gti 2010 - 12.

2015 or later is the mk7. That’s what I would get.

Yep, the MK7 is streets ahead.

GTIs are drivers cars and tend to be used such. You might see more wear than usual on used cars. However, it's an awesome vehicle and VW did a good job with the engine. Very moddable, if you're into it.

Why used? I got the new one. They're pretty unreliable past 40k is what I heard. It is such a great car though, I have a '16 GTI SE

Source for unreliability?

Microsoft PaulAdams Dec 16, 2017

Ah sorry, it's from a local VW mechanic I go to and he in fact recommended that I sell mine once I hit the three year mark. In hindsight, he was probably exaggerating though as I regularly see 100k posts with minimal issues on /r/golfgti

GTI? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Why not be the first on your block to own a used Phaeton

Gti has the 2.0t golf has 2.5l non turbo. Do you enjoy driving? The gti has bigger brakes more features comfier seats and a turbo. Above 150k the gti will be less reliable. The 2.5l engine is one of the most reliable engines Volkswagen has ever built. They get roughly the same gas mileage. Manual or automatic? Manual still the gti. Automatic the transmission in the gti is a dsg. Quick shifting fun. Maintenance is every 40k and can be pricey. The 2.5 golf has a boring transmission with maintenance every 100k. If you like boring and reliable over a long time get the golf. If you enjoy driving at all get the gti
