What happens if I don’t repay my unvested sign on?

The unvested portion is like $10k and they are not taking it out of my paycheck but are going to send me documents instructing me to pay it back. What if... I just don’t do it. Are they really going to sue me over $10k?

They can press charges and it will be in your record !

What are you talking about? You can’t “press charges” if someone doesn’t pay you owed money. You have to sue them or send them to collections. I’m not worried about collections since I don’t think they have the power to affect my credit report.

And they will !! I had a friend who moved and didn't get the documents and was pressed for 6000$ !!

That doesn’t make any sense Cisco. Not repaying is a breach of contract, not a crime. Sounds like your friend got bullied by a clever debt collector

Mike they probably won’t sue you. They might take you to collections though. You could probably just sit on it and see what they do.

Thanks YTB. I don’t think they can affect my Credit Report but I’ll have to double check that. Does anyone know?

I haven’t done this, but if sent to a collections agency and you still don’t pay then it will ding your credit score

You can probably just ask your new company to give you an extra 10k to make up for that. If they really want you, 10k isn't that much.

Too late unfortunately

They'll get a court order to garnish your wages. No need to bother with collections. They could also negatively impact your credit. Not worth it.

Bloomberg MikeBloomb OP Jan 19, 2018

So you think it’s likely they sue me. I find that hard to believe.

They can’t just get a court order. They have to sue and either he doesn’t show and gets default judgement against him, or he loses and has to pay. And even then, only refusal to pay after the court orders could result in wage garnishment. And I don’t think something like this would do it. It generally has to be for something like child/spousal support.
