Has anyone moved from SD to Bay Area? Do you like it or regret it? I have two PM offers - one in SD and other in SF - trying to decide.
Career wise I feel like SF has so many options but if you are planning on staying at the same company for a while go with SD it's the better place!
I donāt mind staying in same company for a while but I think this wonāt be it. Iāve gotten āpromotionsā mostly through job change
SD is a much better place to live. SF has more tech jobs but you can always move up here for the jobs later if you need to
Gets harder later in life since I have two kids. Right now they are young so moving is easier
Fair enough. Question is do you want to be raising young kids without your network around you? Unless you already have a network up here. Iām considering moving down now specifically because I have young kids to
SD = better quality of life but less career options. Want to switch jobs in 2 years? Go to SF.
Thanks - makes sense. I do want to go to a top job in a few years..
No problem! I've been in SD for a while. Awesome life experience but it may have stunted my career growth (that's my own fault too).
Reading comments on Another thread about nyc to SF made me depressed. Is SF really that bad and stressful? I live in SD and love it and want to come to Bay for the career opps but worried about the levels of stress and donāt want to ruin my family harmony - I have a good thing going
I lived in SD for a few years and then moved to SF. I love it and would probably never move back. SD had way more biotech and military jobs (neither of which Iām interested in) than startups or software companies. Also, SD seems to be the place for college kids (PB) or much older people (La Jolla). SF is mostly in between those groups.
Thanks I am in the middle group and in tech now. Although I have 7 years in biotech but I see my future in tech. What about housing, cost of living and work life balance? Have you been able to cope with all that since all of these seem much better in SD?
Expenses are higher but the differences in companies and salaries more than make up for that. For work life balance, you could ask about specific companies on Blind to get a good idea before accepting an offer. Your SF offer should be significantly higher than your SD offer. If so or if youāre already doing well, Iād say take it. IMO, SD canāt compare to SF.
You're married so you'll be fine, do it.
Thanks guys. I think I am gonna do it. Signing the Bay Area offer today. Big move for family. Very early stage venture that Iāll be a key member of - have this nagging fear that I might be taking on more than I can chew. But hoping to channel this nervous energy to making a strong contribution. Phew! Thank you all.
Good luck dude!!
I moved from San Diego to SF after living there for 7 years. I love San Diego any day but SF is also very good. There are lot more benefits working in the bay. I have switched company after moving here last year and my package is 4 times what I used to make in San Diego
Too late, but I worked in SD for 5+ years and SF Bay for about the same. As ppl stated, higher comp and better opp in Bay. However, quality of life for a family with kids is better in SD. You can buy a nice 3000 sq ft house in SD for a little over $1M. No such thing <$3M in the Bay unless you want to commute >1.5hrs one way from some boonie master planned community. Public schools here are either ghetto or immigrant pressure cookers. K-12 Private schools cost an arm and a leg (like a Stanford annual tuition from 20 yrs back). Good luck to you and your family in the Bay.

Considering the opposite.
