What kind of commitment and level of expertise are required?
People put that on LinkedIn profiles, many are early 20s. Not that hard. Probably time consuming tho.
As someone already commented, the hardness depends on the project in question. The popular projects are definitely harder to become a committer in. Usually, it’s almost similar or slightly greater in difficulty than maintaining any internal project in a company. The more commit count/clout you have over components, the faster you would become a committer. In terms of the process itself, usually an existing PMC member puts your name up for vote and you need 3 +1 votes and no vetos.
Any projects you suggest which are in initial stages , where committing might be easier (or less time consuming)?
