This happens at my current company and companies I’ve been at in the past. It’s really unfortunate and it goes largely unnoticed because no one speaks up about it. I’m guilty of this as well. It’s really sad that people can’t just see colleagues as other people, even if they don’t agree with their lifestyle. I’d say that I’ve seen the most anti-gay cultures in sales departments. They’re typically filled with “sales bros”, especially when they lack women, which is the case at my company. Most inclusive department would probably be engineering. The engineers I’ve met are mostly atheists and don’t really care what others choose to do outside of work.
Totally accepting, but the word taboo bullshit is silly.
The situation will not improve until other people in the office, apart from the Gay person, challenge the abuser. So, if a Gay/Lesbian work colleagues is getting abuse, you speak up for them.
Well stated.
This, how hard is it to say "dude, seriously?! Not cool." public shaming works on most and for those who it doesn't there's hr and let them know when this gets out they will be considered another uber.
never seen much homophobia in 20 yrs of tech..
I haven't seen any homophobia in the engineering / tech companies I've worked at so far. Although I wouldn't be surprised if it exists in the more conservative sectors like the finance industry.

My experience is that engineers are most inclusive compared to others. But it is easy to bully them so that’s why they are always in the spotlight
I’d agree. I’m not sure there are many engineers out there who are anti-gay. Maybe it’s because of their out of the box thinking? Or maybe as you mentioned, since they get bullied more often, they are more inclusive.
