Entry level info sec major here, looking to get up to the Boston area. The FL heat and laughable salaries aren't worth staying down here. I'm currently working for a promising startup, but, like I said, I'm making peanuts. Applied for a position with Raytheon but haven't heard back. Anyone have any tips to get up there/know about any sure-thing openings in info sec?
I moved away from the South, and man do I miss the nice weather. If you don’t mind 6 months of dreary winter, where it gets below zero, you may be fine. That kind of winter isn’t for me.
I grew up in FL, ended up in Boston, and wouldn’t ever go back. Yeah, winter is cold, but you take up skiing and make the best of it. I love having 4 seasons that aren’t called: hot, hotter, hottest, and Christmas. Defense industry is definitely a good way to break into New England if you are a citizen, though not necessarily into Boston. There is a lot of defense companies in the suburbs and up into southern NH. You can reverse commute if you want to live in the city. I did it from Cambridge/Somerville to Andover for years and it wasn’t bad at all. Find a contracting agency based in mass or NH and they will help place you. If you like a company and they like you it is usually possible to convert to a permanent employee.
What kind of info sec postings are you looking for? I have friends at a really hot info sec start up that are hiring dm me for more details
I moved from New England to the South. Now in Virginia. Here's a warning, the winters are terrible... I've been wanting to move to Florida. Cost of living sucks in Boston too. If you're looking for an in, this probably isn't the best page to do so. If you're into thinking ling term, you can get a job with a big bank, then transfer to Boston and find a new one. If you have a security clearance, there are tons of government contractors up there which you can probably apply in the dark for.
I really appreciate the advice! I'm thinking more on the side of contractor work. Where would you recommend starting if I want to eventually transfer to the NE area?
